"Within the frame of the picture itself we see a group of men watching three otherswalking towards a distant object. This trio are Commander Edward Obbard, Lieutenant Harold West and Lieutenant Commander G.A Hodges, an expert in mine disposal, and the object in the shallows is a magnetic mine dropped off Whitstable Sands by a German aircraft. The concept began as an idea between Eric Ravilious and Helen Ninyon in 1935 for a children's illustrated alphabet of 26 shops.
