Originally for ‘This is London’ (1959). This is Liverpool Station c. 1959 (compare with Bawden’s Liverpool St. Station). In 1848 W. H. Smith, the son of a bookseller, gained exclusive rights to set up a book and newspaper shop in the London and North Western Railway stations. At that time, Smiths were also librarians, lending their books to train travelers who would return them after their journey. This is a very impressive print, evocative of time and place - the serviceman is still in his livery; ‘American is Best’ says the sign, and all the gentlemen still wear suits.
