Bill Smith

In many ways I am a romantic painter but also like the industrial energy of L.S.Lowry and the tension and space of Edward Hopper. Since childhood I have been fascinated with railways and motoring. As a result, the major impetus behind a great deal of my work is the memory of childhood which, like dreams, is in full colour. Looking at black and white photographs from the past fires my memories of industrial Britain, vintage motor racing, and railways under steam. By setting the drawing out on paper, I then draw the image with the brush. I am a graduate of Goldsmith's and the Royal College of Art and have taught art for forty years. In retirement I am a sign writer on the Mid Suffolk Railway.
